by Humphrey, assisted by dear friend, Ian Mee
My name is Humphrey, Russian by breed, A loyal companion, fulfilling each need. To my dearest Alwyn, my heart and my guide, Together we’ve roamed, side by side.
Through 40,000 walks, each step with care, Rain or shine, we’d wander, free as the air.
With smiles and laughs, we’d talk through the day, In a language only friendship can say.
I became the SPCA’s star, you see, With a heart full of hope and pure empathy. A million rand raised, and still going strong, Through look-alike boxes, I’d rally along.
In the garden, I’d find the flowers and dance, Pausing to water them every chance.
Some may have drowned, but what could I say? Each splash was my gift to brighten your day!
Then there was the tree, towering and grand, My true romance, too big to withstand.
I’d nuzzle its roots and dream of the sky— That tree was my Everest, my mighty high!
My spirit was gentle, with kindness to share, Especially with children who knew I’d be there. For you, I’d guard fiercely, come what may, Protecting my friend in every way.
And though the French poodle played it so cool, Our bond was unique, in the doggy school. She’d sniff and sigh, but deep down we knew, She’d miss me if I weren’t there too.
And ah, the sixties tunes we both adored, From Beatles’ beats to today’s accord.
In every note, I found joy anew, Dancing beside you, my friendship true.
So here’s to our journeys, our laughter and song, To every flower, every moment so strong. Thank you, dear Alwyn, for each cherished day, In spirit, beside you, forever I’ll stay.
I hope this brings out even more of Humphrey’s joyful, quirky personality!
